The 38-year-old Ukrainian has no intention of stopping anytime soon, which is bad news for opponents, particularly the British ones he often defeats. He mentioned Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Derek Chisora, and Joseph Parker as potential opponents in the future, but he insisted that he is still a young man.
During his press conference, Usyk stated, “I will continue to train and box, but I am unable to predict who my next opponent will be at this time.”
I haven’t seen my wife or family in three and a half months of preparation. I share a house with my team of 14 guys every day. I want to return home now.
In the fifth, Usyk down Dubois twice, the second time using a lunging left hook. In front of roughly 90,000 spectators at Wembley, the London native appeared startled the canvas and was unable to beat the count.
Usyk, who is more well-known for being a cunning strategist than a powerful puncher, undoubtedly responded to inquiries about his age and whether he would slow down.
No controversy
There was no low-blow drama as Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) defeated Dubois for the second time in less than two years. Of all things, it was a straight jab that ended the fight in the ninth round in Poland. However, Saturday’s last shot was undeniable.
Before moving up in weight six years ago, Usyk was an undisputed cruiserweight world champion. Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) joined British compatriots Fury and Joshua in losing twice to Usyk.
The 27-year-old Dubois knocked out Joshua in a spectacular fashion in his most recent bout, which also took place at Wembley.
He told DAZN, “I gave everything I had,” but he was unable to summon the same magic. Don’t give that man any credit; I’ll be back.
Compared to two years ago, when Usyk won nearly every round and barraged him with jabs, the Briton put on a better performance. Dubois’ camp was pressuring him to utilize a double jab between the fourth and fifth rounds on Saturday, but there was not enough time to execute the orders before Usyk halted it.
Since Lennox Lewis just over 25 years ago, Dubois hoped to become the first British heavyweight to hold all of the main titles.
Usyk relinquished the IBF championship to Dubois last year when the Ukrainian decided to concentrate on his rematch with Fury.
When asked if he believes he is one of the greatest athletes of all time, Usyk responded emphatically, “No.”
“I’m just disciplined,” he said.
I have disciples, not motivation. “Short-term motivation,” he stated.
UK has been good to Usyk
According to Usyk, Britain has become a “second home” to him. At the 2012 London Olympics, he took home a gold medal. In 2021, he defeated Anthony Joshua in front of a crowded Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
I am really appreciative of this nation. He said, “Thank you so much; you’re the best.”
Usyk won the title of European amateur light heavyweight champion in Liverpool in 2008.
Usyk defeated Tony Bellew of Liverpool in Manchester in his final cruiserweight bout. He hasn’t lost a fight in sixteen years and is still undefeated as a professional.
Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua?
The stadium was booed loudly as Jake Paul entered, as seen on the large screens. When DAZN asked him if he will fight Joshua, he replied, “It’s going to happen.” The former boxer and YouTuber predicted that it will take place at Wembley.
Among the VIPs was Frank Bruno. Thirty years ago, at the former Wembley Stadium, the London native defeated Oliver McCall to win the WBC heavyweight title. Six months later, Mike Tyson knocked him out.
Usyk wore a jumpsuit and carried an Eeyore stuffed donkey from the Winnie the Pooh books as he approached the stadium. Apparently given to him by his daughter, he also brought it to previous battles.
