GOP state representative David Clark recently submitted papers to investigate his chances, while Cumming Republican state senator Greg Dolezal has also been thinking about running for office.
Tillery, a real estate lawyer who was first elected in 2016, advanced swiftly up the chamber’s ranks and was named chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee in 2020. Prior to entering the Senate, he was the chair of the Toombs County Commission.
Although balancing the state’s $67.2 billion budget is Tillery’s usual emphasis while at the Capitol, he advocated more controversial bills during the most recent legislative session.
Tillery sponsored a bill that would provide Georgians the right to sue local law enforcement organizations they claim use sanctuary policies to protect immigrants. Additionally, he attempted to prevent state health insurance from covering transgender Georgians’ medical expenses. Despite hours of debate and the backing of his Republican Senate colleagues, both bills were eventually unsuccessful in the House.
According to Tillery, people may find it difficult to make a decision in the crowded Republican primary, but he hopes to be able to continue his role of passing conservative, balanced budgets over the last few years.
