Senate weighs Trump s Big, Beautiful Bill as GOP pushes for vote
CNN: President Donald Trump’s comprehensive domestic policy package, which includes significant tax cuts, border security measures, and a number of spending reforms, may be put to a vote by the U.S. Senate this week. Republican leaders are trying to mobilize people in favor of what Trump refers to as his “big, beautiful bill.” Proponents claim that its goals are to strengthen the country, cut taxes, and slash costs.
According to Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY), it’s a strategy to secure the border, slash taxes, lower costs, and, of course, strengthen our country.
The bill is fiercely opposed by Democrats, who claim it will hurt working people. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) stated, “You’re reducing Medicaid, food assistance, and child care, which makes it more difficult for women to enter the workforce, all in order to give tax breaks to people who already have access to all of these things.”
The bill’s Medicaid cuts, which may be more severe than those in a previous House version, are one of its main points of contention. Even some Republicans are raising concerns, and Democrats warn that millions may lose their health insurance.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) stated that the leader must meet with the rural hospitals and address their concerns in order to ensure their continued existence.
A clause to increase the cap on state and municipal sales taxes is another contentious issue. Fiscal conservatives are concerned about the package because it would increase the federal debt ceiling and extend trillions of dollars in tax breaks.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) cautioned that Republicans own the debt after they vote unanimously or nearly unanimously in favor of the debt ceiling.
