Senate nears vote on Trump s budget bill amid GOP divisions and democratic delays
CNN: President Donald Trump’s comprehensive budget proposal is up for a vote in the Senate today, but passage is still far from assured. Democrats are again pushing for delays, bringing dozens of amendments to the floor. They contend that Americans ought to have more time to comprehend the implications of the plan.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said, “This bill takes away people’s jobs, raises their electricity bills, and steals their healthcare in order to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.”
Republicans, on the other hand, are praising the law as a key component of their platform. It talks about modernizing the military. It deals with border security. Restoring energy dominance is the topic of discussion. According to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), it prolongs tax relief for the American people. I am aware that folks are tired. However, Republicans can only afford to lose three votes due to the slim majority, and a number of senators have already voiced their opposition to the bill.
Sen. Tom Tillis (R-NC) said he opposes it because he is worried that some eligible Medicaid recipients would no longer be covered. Due to deficit worries, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is against the measure, claiming it would increase the national debt by trillions. Sen. John Curtis of Utah has also voiced his opposition to new wind and solar energy taxes. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who both previously deviated from their party on amendments pertaining to Medicaid, are also uncertain.
The bill would return to the House, where its future is equally uncertain, if it were to pass the Senate.
According to Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), many of us in the House are concerned about the Senate bill. I believe it will be difficult for us to pass.
