Meals on Wheels of Middle Georgia pushes through heat wave to serve hundreds of clients

Georgia’s MACON (41NBC/WMGT) While many are forced to stay indoors due to triple-digit heat indices, Meals on Wheels of Middle Georgia (MOWMIDGA) staff members say that high conditions make it even more crucial to get outside and accomplish their jobs.

Despite the heat, it’s crucial to ensure that every customer gets their food, according to Lashandria Jackson, a MOWMIDGA Community Outreach Specialist. Because, as I mentioned before, we are occasionally the only person they see, and that can be their only meal for the day.

Every day, the charity provides services to about 300 seniors in Bibb and Jones County. Jackson claims that after witnessing her grandmother’s success with Meals on Wheels, she became involved and now uses it as inspiration when things become difficult.

According to Jackson, she had an excellent experience with Meals on Wheels. And since I am a giver, I believe that this is also how I give back.

Taylor Mosley works at Meals on Wheels of Middle Georgia as an assessor. Mosley looks through the list of the 20–30 people she will be seeing each day. “This calls for a little more attention to detail in extreme conditions,” she explains.

“When I’m out there, I do try to stay hydrated just to make sure the clients get their meals,” Mosley added. To ensure that the meals are hot and ready for the customer, we do add bricks to them. Alternatively, we do offer ice packs to keep the meals cold if they are cold that day.

Mosley claims that she makes an effort to make every encounter with her clients memorable because she is aware that they might be the only ones she has that day.

“I feel like I’m doing something good for the community when I see the clients happy and ready for their meals,” Mosley remarked. Additionally, it makes me feel really wonderful to have that one interaction with the person.

Clients receive a holiday package to make sure they have food to eat during Meals on Wheels’ closures on holidays like the Fourth of July. Jackson claims that while it’s comforting to know they’re taken care of, nothing compares to a quality one-on-one conversation.

“I enjoy working with the clients,” Jackson remarked. And that’s my favorite aspect of my work.
