Man, woman arrested in Montezuma after police chase

MONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Two people were taken into custody on Saturday afternoon in Montezuma after a police chase ended in a crash and search.

According to the Montezuma Police Department, an officer stopped a car on Vienna Road for a Window Tint Violation. The officer says during the stop the driver sped off, but crashed shortly after the vehicle hit a tree due to the wet road at the Harris and Grey Street Intersection. The two inside the car then ran from the scene to nearby woods.

Law enforcement then secured the area until a Montezuma Police Department K9 arrived and located 41-year-old Antonio Gujardo hiding near Whisperwood Court Subdivision. Gujardo is charged with Possession of Marijuana, Obstruction, Drug Warrants out of Florida and a Deportation warrant and later transported to the Sumter County Jail in Americus.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 42-year-old Meagan Platt Fairchild, who officers say she initially told them she didn’t know Gujardo, and he told her not to stop the vehicle.

Police say while interviewing Fairchild, she then stated she was in the area to drop off her family members in Cordele, and contacted Gujardo who was staying on Carl Oliver Jones Road in Macon County, where she picked him up. According to police, she says Gujardo told her to go when they were being stopped because he had outstanding criminal arrest warrants.

Fairchild was charged with Window Tint Violation, Fleeing Attempt to Elude, City Obstruction, Failures to Maintain Lane with an Accident. Fairchild posted a cash bond on her charges.
