John Oliver’s Erie Moon Mammoths debut in front of a record crowd

During Last Week Tonight on May 4, Oliver highlighted different nicknames and promotions in Minor League Baseball. Oliver asked teams to submit ideas on why they should be renamed by the show’s crew at the conclusion of the segment.

Pitches were submitted by 47 teams, including the Detroit Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves.

Greg Coleman, the president of Erie, gave a list of eleven reasons why they were the ideal candidate, which included: The SeaWolves don’t play baseball beside the water.

It was truly edifying to see so many teams show interest. It sort of confirms what we already believed to be the unique quality of minor league baseball. Oliver stated, “We believed that this group of people would react to the absurd idea that we had.”

On May 18, Erie was declared the champion. Oliver and his team spent six weeks researching the Moon Mammoths, and on June 29 they were finally revealed. Among them was Fuzz, the mascot, a purple woolly mammoth with a space helmet.

We did notice that Erie was, you know, a little different. And I say it as an insult as well as a complement, which is the greatest compliment imaginable,” Oliver remarked. The Moon Mammoth struck us as being especially strange for some reason. It had the feel of a motif for a baseball team. It was especially unexpected because you could practically picture the emblem in your mind.

It’s a small marvel that this was put together in less than three months. Typically, it takes a team 16 months to get their other identity accepted before they can play.

When I submitted it, I believed we had a strong shot. “It was a little surreal when we were chosen,” Coleman remarked. Additionally, the “Last Week Tonight” crew has been fantastic and meticulous ever since.

In 1991, while scuba diving, George Moon discovered the bone of a prehistoric mammoth, which inspired the name Moon Mammoths. The remains are kept in Harrisburg at the Pennsylvania State Museum.

Since the announcement of the makeover, Moon has gained popularity in the area. Oliver threw the ceremonial first pitch to him while he was at the game.

It’s enjoyable. “I’m having fun,” Moon remarked. I never would have imagined that this kind of event could have happened all those years ago. In 2021, the newspaper celebrated its 30th anniversary. Apart from that, I haven’t heard anything.

According to Coleman, the team has completed the equivalent of four years’ worth of online sales in just three weeks since the Moon Mammoths were revealed. In the concourse area, the queue extended to near home plate, with people waiting to enter the team store, which was situated in left field.

Wearing makeshift tusks, Karyn Drombosky and Sean Mizerski drove from Pittsburgh and waited to enter the team store.

It’s simply fantastic. We love baseball a lot. Minor league games are entertaining, and we frequently see the Pirates. “It’s so silly,” Drombosky remarked. We frequently watch John Oliver. When we learned that he had chosen the Erie crew to take over, we were both shocked and thrilled.

Oliver not only threw out the first pitch but also led the crowd in Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the seventh inning stretch and played batboy for one inning. Oliver’s first pitch cap and jersey will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In the bottom of the ninth, Erie was behind 6-3, but Kevin McGonigle’s two-run double brought them within one run. With the bases loaded, Yaqui Rivera of Chesapeake ended the game by striking out Josue Brice.

It had a wonderful mood. Everything went without a hitch. The ability to host an event like that is not something that occurs frequently in minor league baseball. According to Andrew Graham, manager of Erie, everyone had a great evening.

In addition to September 12 and 13, the Moon Mammoths will return on August 19. At least four Moon Mammoths games are scheduled for the upcoming season, according to Coleman.

Baseball in the minor leagues is something I adore. Oliver remarked that it had a unique eccentricity about it. Since minor league baseball is eager to try anything, it seemed like a good fit for our show. This was demonstrated by the fact that more than half of the league was prepared to rebrand, sight unseen, and entrust their trust to a group of people who are objectively unreliable. That was a poor choice, and I adore things about minor league baseball that include poor choices.
