J. Michael Evans sworn in as the Mayor of Centerville
Georgia’s Centerville (41NBC/WMGT) On Tuesday evening, J. Michael Evans took the oath of office as Centerville’s tenth mayor.
The event happened a week after Evans defeated fellow former city councilman Justin Wright in a special election. Evans asked his supporters and those who did not vote for him to join him on what he called the “journey toward progress” during his speech inside City Hall.
“I think our community has a lot of power,” Evans added. And what do you know? I think the best days are still to come.
Evans, who spent over thirty years in the U.S. Air Force, ran on a platform of fortifying the city’s ties with Robins Air Force Base. The expansion of community leisure areas and, above all, improving public safety are other goals he says he would pursue. Evans swore in a new police officer as his first official act, demonstrating his dedication to the cause.
We discuss having places for people to visit and economic development, Evans added. However, people won’t travel to those places if they don’t feel comfortable. Thus, it’s crucial.
Evans became the first Black mayor of Centerville ten years after he was elected as the city’s first Black councilman. Arias Cody, his daughter, claims that her father serves as an inspiration and role model for the whole family.
“It makes me feel good to know that my daddy is actually making Black history,” Cody said, adding, “just seeing him go for two things he really wants and to win makes me feel like everything he’s told me growing up, like never feel like you can’t do anything.” Having his grandchildren admire him and think, “My grandaddy did it, so can I.”
Evans claims that the amount of support he received during his campaign and on inauguration night, especially from fraternity brothers and family who went across state borders to witness his swearing-in, moved him. Evans claims that the encouragement he receives from family members and city dwellers increases his desire to see results.
According to Evans, it motivates you to take a risk and carry out your promises in order to provide for your constituents.

John Harley, the previous mayor of Centerville, resigned in December, and Evans took over. Mayor Evans will run for reelection in November for a full four-year term because last week’s election was a special election.
