The killings, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, were the department’s worst single-incident fatalities since 1857, when four policemen were shot and killed.
Detectives William Osborn, Victor Lemus, and Joshua Kelley-Eklund were named by the department as the individuals who were killed on Friday. According to Luna, they each spent 19, 22, and 33 years in the agency.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting the department’s homicide detectives in their investigation into the fatalities.
With the help of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Luna said on Friday that it took over four hours to make the scene safe and that the department’s murder detectives were looking into the killings. He said no one else was hurt.
The arson and explosives unit receives extensive training and handles over 1,000 calls annually, according to the sheriff.
