Georgia AG warns violent protesters could face domestic terrorism charges

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr

issued a public safety warning

on Wednesday that said while peaceful protest is protected under the Constitution, violence in the name of public policy will not be tolerated in the state.

Carr’s statement comes as

protests and riots continue in cities across the country

,

including large demonstrations over federal immigration enforcement policies. According to a CNN report, more than 20 businesses were looted in Los Angeles after a day of largely peaceful rallies.

“All Americans have the right to peacefully protest,” Carr said in a written statement Wednesday. “No American has the right to destroy property, loot businesses, or attack law enforcement officers.”

Carr drew a clear line between protest and violence.

“It’s very simple,” he said. “Protesters use words. Rioters use violence. There is no gray area.” He added that in Georgia, anyone who engages in violence to try to change public policy can be charged with Domestic Terrorism, which carries a penalty of 5 to 35 years in prison.

Governor Brian Kemp also

addressed the situation

in a Facebook post Wednesday.

“My office remains in close contact with state and local law enforcement and stands ready to take whatever appropriate action is needed to safeguard our communities from crime and violence while also respecting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly,” Kemp said. “My support for public safety officers and the rule of law is unwavering, and any violence against those who protect and serve will be met with quick and heavy accountability.”

Carr said the the state will continue to protect the right to protest but will not hesitate to pursue domestic terrorism charges “for those who earn it.”
