DeKalb officer becomes 4th from Georgia killed in line of duty this year

This year, the DeKalb officer was the fourth Georgian to be killed while performing their duties. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which keeps track of law enforcement fatalities, Georgia is currently third in the country for officer deaths, behind Texas with five and California with ten.

According to the Officer Down page, 33 policemen have already left the DeKalb police department. On January 2, 2021, Sgt. Daniel Mobley was struck by a car, making him the final DeKalb officer to pass away while on duty.

While responding to a collision involving another DeKalb officer at the Williams Street exit at around nine in the morning, Mobley, a 22-year veteran of the department, was struck by a car. Despite being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, he did not make it out alive. Mobley was forty-four.

In 2025, 51 officers nationwide lost their lives while performing their duties. Three other Georgia cops lost their lives in different instances earlier this year.

Investigators said that Brandon Sikes, a Columbia County Deputy, was shot during a traffic stop on I-20 on April 26. Gavin White, a second deputy, suffered serious injuries in the shooting.

James Montgomery opened fire while detectives were trying to serve him with a warrant. Police later discovered him dead inside his camper.

Sikes had been with the agency for seven years. His wife, who was also employed by the department, and their daughter survive him.

April 16: A head-on collision on Flat Shoals Road claimed the life of Lt. Helio Garcia of the South Fulton police force. His age was 47.

Garcia was known for his leadership and commitment to his family. He had joined the department in 2018, the year it was established. He was the first cop from South Fulton to be slain while performing their duties.

Chief Keith Meadows elevated Garcia to captain after his funeral.

“We are reminded not only of the life you gave, but also of the unwavering devotion that led you to serve,” Meadows stated of your ultimate sacrifice to the citizens of South Fulton, Georgia.

Roswell police, February 7Investigators said that while responding to a complaint, Officer Jeremy Labonte was shot at a shopping complex on Market Boulevard. He was twenty-four.

After allegedly firing multiple shots at the officer, 23-year-old Edward Espinoza was taken into custody and charged with murder.

Labonte’s wife survives him. The officer’s funeral service drew hundreds of people.
