DeChambeau headed for Ryder Cup return after strong rally at British Open

DeChambeau seems to be on track to rejoin the U.S. squad for the September matches against Europe at Bethpage Black, aided by a strong recovery at the British Open.

After shooting 7-over 78 in the opening round on Thursday, he appeared to be headed home, but he persevered and finished with a 65-68-64 record. After tying for fifth at the Masters and tying for second at the PGA Championship, he was tied for tenth place.

DeChambeau won the U.S. Open last year and has seven top-10 finishes in his last 13 majors appearances.

DeChambeau cemented his fifth-place finish in the points rankings for qualifying for the U.S. Ryder Cup. Bradley has six picks, and the top six automatically make the squad.

DeChambeau can’t accumulate any more points before the qualification period ends after four more tournaments because he competes on the LIV Golf circuit.

DeChambeau is expected to attend Bethpage for his third Ryder Cup in one form or another.

“I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that’s going to be rooting for Team USA,” stated DeChambeau, 31, whose well-known YouTube channel further solidifies his place among the most well-known golfers in the world.

After losing in Italy in 2023 without DeChambeau, the U.S. squad will be trying to reclaim the cup from Europe.

“This year is serious,” he stated. We’re sick of it. We’ve had enough of losing.

DeChambeau was pleased with his recovery from Thursday’s subpar round at Portrush, which was aided by the links course off the North Atlantic having better-than-expected conditions.

As I have always stated, I prefer fair conditions. The player known only as The Scientist declared, “I can play well.” “I still need to figure out the code in the wind and rain. However, I believe that certain possibilities and answers are approaching.

Simply put, development takes a long time. I’m beginning to understand.

Garcia s rage

After a poor drive at the British Open, Sergio Garcia lost his temper and played his final 16 holes without a driver.

On No. 2, Garcia hooked his tee shot and smacked his driver onto the ground. He tossed the part with the club head toward his golf bag after it broke in two.

He said, “I’ve done that fifty times and I’ve never broken a club.” I was shocked when the shaft abruptly snapped in two parts.

Garcia finished the tournament at 3 under after making a birdie on the second hole and four more in a 68.

Lowry’s grandstand finish

At No. 18, Shane Lowry reflected on Justin Rose from 27 years ago as he stood over his ball next to the green.

Like Rose famously did as an amateur at Royal Birkdale in England in 1998, Lowry thought it would have been fairly cool to hole out at the 72nd hole to crown the Irishman’s homecoming at Royal Portrush.

The ball rolled in the direction of the hole, hit the flagstick, and remained out. Lowry signed for a final 5-under 66, but after 2019, he would not be able to win a second claret jug at Portrush.

Perhaps Portmarnock, a course 30 minutes from Lowry’s home, will host the next British Open on the island of Ireland. In order to determine whether the beach linkages north of Dublin can be included in the 10-venue rotation, the R&A has begun a feasibility study.

According to Lowry, I could play in an Open while remaining at home. It is among the world’s top golf courses. It’s excellent enough, in my opinion, to host an Open, and maybe it will happen soon.
