Boaters urged to follow safety laws during Fourth of July weekend
Georgia’s MACON (41NBC/WMGT)Those who intend to spend this Independence Day weekend on the lakes are being reminded by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to exercise caution when boating.
Life jacket safety is a major worry this holiday weekend.
According to DNR Game Warden Wes Freeman of Georgia State, all passengers should wear life jackets. He adds that a fire extinguisher and throw pillows are essential.
It’s crucial to understand boating laws and regulations, according to Freeman.
“Watch everyone on board,” Freeman said. Be cautious when you’re in the water and keep an eye out for other boaters.
Additionally, he pointed out that there are numerous life jacket lending stations near lakes for anyone who might require an additional jacket for the day.
The DNR reported over 100 boating events, 20 boating deaths, and 52 boating injuries last year. People not paying attention or being intoxicated are frequent causes of these incidents.
“It doesn’t take much alcohol to get you under the influence when it’s hot outside,” Freeman added. When drinking water, be mindful of your boundaries.
According to Freeman, law officers will keep an eye out for anyone who are intoxicated and make sure kids are wearing life jackets.
Live music will begin at 6:30 p.m., and fireworks will follow at 9:15 p.m. for those who are planning to celebrate at Lake Tobesofkee.
