Bibb County Jail inmate dies after collapsing in cell

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Investigators with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office are looking into the death of an inmate who collapsed inside his cell late Saturday night.

According to a news release, just before 12 a.m., corrections deputies were alerted by inmates that a fellow inmate was unresponsive.

Deputies say jail medical staff began life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. The 36-year-old man was taken to Atrium Health Navicent for treatment, where hospital staff later pronounced him dead, the release said.

The sheriff’s office said an autopsy will be performed because the death happened while the man was in custody. His name and offense information will be released once relatives are notified.
