Around 1:30 a.m., an hour after the bars had closed for the evening, the gunfire occurred, one of a dozen that were reported throughout the city that weekend.

Santos Wyatt, 27, was found laying on the ground with severe injuries when the cops came. He didn’t make it out alive. According to Wyatt’s obituary, his funeral will take place at the neighboring Liberty Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the weekend was especially violent in a year when killings are declining throughout the city because there were four shootings reported along Edgewood Avenue.

At a press conference on July 28, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated, “We haven’t had a weekend like this in a long time.” We are aware that when it comes to crime and gun violence in our communities, the summer months frequently offer some of the most difficult periods. We are making every effort to stop these tragedies before they occur.

Following the killing, a number of business owners and community leaders told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they believed the city had not gone far enough in addressing the illegal parties and late-night street takeovers that had caused unrest in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood.

This week, city officials in Atlanta pledged to tighten policing along Edgewood Avenue in reaction to the shooting. To make the corridor safer, they pledged to increase patrols and enforce the code.

According to Atlanta police, they are also collaborating with outside organizations to concentrate on the streets in the area, where teams will carry out licensing and compliance checks for alcohol sales after hours, occupancy restrictions, and food vending laws.

Legislation establishing a neighborhood public safety task force was also presented by City Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari, whose district encompasses the region.

She referred to Edgewood Avenue as a vital component of Atlanta culture and stated that the team will collaborate with residents and local government representatives to develop ideas that would reduce crime in the neighborhood.
