Steve Sosebee, HEAL Palestine’s executive director and co-founder, says the organization has assisted in treating scores of children over the last 18 months.
The group has now welcomed two children to Atlanta, including Yassin.
Local activists, volunteers, and members of the Palestinian community greeted him with hugs and applause when he arrived Sunday afternoon with his mother and brothers.
Although it’s uncertain what the road to recovery would entail, Yassin will receive prosthetic treatment at Wellstar. He hasn’t been able to walk for almost a year, which suggests that his muscles may be weak and in need of rehabilitation.
He will be fitted more quickly if surgery is not required, Sosebee stated. However, there will also be a healing period if he has surgery.
As Gaza’s food crisis worsens, Yassin and his siblings are also experiencing extreme malnourishment. The World Health Organization states that 63 persons in the region lost their lives to malnutrition-related causes in July alone.
HEAL Palestine intends to get Yassin and his siblings enrolled in school, as well as seek pediatricians and prosthetic therapy. According to Sosebee, the restrictions and fighting in the area have prevented them from attending lessons for the past two years.
According to Sosebee, it is our responsibility to provide these children with the care they require, yet the demand is so great that it is regrettable.
Until they are able to locate permanent home, Yassin and his family will stay with Sandy Springs spa owner Maureen Hermann. According to Hermann, she has previously volunteered with the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund, a nonprofit organization that Sosebee also founded, and has hosted families from Gaza.
Hermann remarked, “I’m just so glad to have the family here.” I hope they feel accepted in this nation and receive the medical attention and care they require.
Echoing Hermann’s thoughts, Mona Megahed, a pediatrician at East Cobb Pediatrics who was there at Yassin’s arrival, added that she took her girls to the airport as a sign of solidarity for the family while they were in Atlanta.
Megahed stated that if this can occur there, it may occur anywhere. If we aren’t going to get up right now, when will we?
As the hunger crisis continues to garner attention, U.S. officials traveled to assistance delivery locations in Gaza on Friday. Steve Witkoff, the special envoy, stated on X that the visit would assist in formulating a plan for the provision of food and medical assistance to the area.
Naturally, children are innocent, Megahed stated. They did not merit this in any way.
