The district withheld information on the children’s ailments and symptoms, as well as how the pupils got their hands on the gummies.
The district urged parents to talk to their kids about the value of exercising sound judgment before eating, particularly if the kids are unsure of the food’s origins.
According to official records, Stephensen enrolled about 800 pupils in grades six, seven, and eight last year.
In recent years, students who consumed gummies or other goodies laced with different chemicals have become ill at a number of schools in the metro Atlanta area.
In 2019, Valentine’s Day chocolates shared by Sandtown Middle School pupils contained THC, a compound found in marijuana, according to GBI lab testing. Twenty-eight of the students were transported to nearby hospitals. According to Fulton County Schools at the time, it charged a few pupils with violating the code of conduct by consuming, possessing, and/or distributing illegal narcotics.
When 11 pupils were admitted to the hospital in 2021 after consuming gummies, Otwell Middle School in Forsyth County was placed on medical lockdown. Five milligrams of melatonin were found in gummy supplements that a student brought to school, according to officials.
The DeKalb district has been asked to provide a copy of this week’s incident report to the AJC.
