The morning after: Community reacts to CDC shooting, emergency that ensued

At 7:38 a.m. on Saturday, Emory University declared an end to its emergency.

The CDC entrance was patrolled by a few security personnel. The Emory Point shopping mall, where the gunman had fired into the CVS, was circled by a private security guard.

There were still some remnants of Friday’s tragedy. There were two bullet holes in the CVS door, and bright yellow signs that stated “store closed until further notice” were displayed at both entrances.

Someone had left a bouquet of pink tulips at the foot of the CVS stairs that faced the CDC and that the shooter had rushed down as he shot across the street.

Four gunshot holes were visible across the street at the CDC door, their spiderweb cracks obscuring the glass and making the guards inside difficult to see.

The exterior of CDC building 21 was covered in bullet holes, with around 40 bullets striking the glass window panes from floor to ceiling.

The dancing studio across the street from CVS, dancing 101, remained dark on Friday night after an employee confronted the shooter while she was en route to opening the studio. However, the music returned on Saturday morning, and classes continued as usual, with about 60 people inside the studio.

Dance 101’s owner, Ofelia deLaValette, arrived at the studio on Saturday morning but was absent on Friday night.

Since that happened, we’ve been in a panic, she added. I’m hoping for a reset. It’s really unsettling. We have many unanswered questions and our hearts are just so heavy.

We are accustomed to protests, picketing, and other events because we are across from the CDC. Sadly, with all the controversy surrounding the organization, “DeLaValette added.”
