Actor who helped start Georgia film tax credit gets amped-up ‘Naked Gun’ role

Fitzgerald has never experienced what happened next in his lengthy career: the makers of Naked Gun were so impressed by his humorous abilities that they built a role specifically for him.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Fitzgerald as saying, “I think they saw my personal sense of humor.” More or less dry stuff is what I do. They realized that matched the film’s tone.

Fitzgerald portrays Dan Daly, a longtime retired mixed martial arts athlete who is completely insane as a broadcaster.

Fitzgerald claimed that because he has been hit too many times, he is always saying improper things. My character killed four opponents in the ring, earning him the nickname “The Bloody Widowmaker.”

During filming at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, Fitzgerald’s character sat next to real mixed martial art announcers Jon Anik and Michael Bisping.

He claimed that he had never had so much pleasure or been allowed so much freedom to accomplish and create things on his own.

After the movie was finished, Fitzgerald was flown to Los Angeles to bolster his part and read even more ridiculous lines because the filmmakers were so thrilled.

When his character tells a TV audience about Det. Frank Drebin Jr.’s privates in a ridiculous way after Drebin tears his trousers, he stated, “They really raunched it up.”

Given that the majority of this genre has been moving directly to streaming in recent years, it is unusual that The Naked Gun is even making its way into theaters. Examples include Eddie Murphy’s 2021 release of Come 2 America on Amazon and the recently released Adam Sandler sequel Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix. (Paramount even had Neeson do a spoof public service announcement about the topic.)

Fitzgerald remarked that perhaps this will help change the course. The movie will, in my opinion, be a huge comfort for people to simply enter a theater and laugh with others without any interruptions. It is undoubtedly the same dry, absurd, and foolish tone. Additionally, Liam and Pam get along well. (People magazine revealed their relationship on Tuesday.)

Ben Gazzara’s portrayal of a terminally ill lawyer in the 1960s NBC series Run For Your Life served as an inspiration for Fitzgerald, 76, who was born in Atlanta, to pursue a career in acting and law. He worked as a lawyer for many years and also acted in industrial training films and TV and radio ads in Atlanta.

He left the legal profession in the middle of the 1980s to pursue acting, and he went on to appear in films and television series like Matlock, Robocop 3, and In the Heat of the Night. He alternated between Atlanta and New York for ten years until deciding to move back to Atlanta full-time in 2007.

It was well timed. He was part of a close-knit group of performers from Atlanta that were successful in getting the Georgia legislature to enact the 2008 tax credit system, which made the state one of the most sought-after locations for movie and television productions for a while.

Fitzgerald had served as the Georgia Municipal Association’s general counsel in the 1970s. “I learned how to write legislation and lobby there,” he remarked. Those specific abilities and expertise came back to me when I began working on the tax incentives.

He has been disappointed to see Georgia’s business slow down during the last two years, but he has no simple solution to the state’s inability to compete with other regions, particularly Europe.

“I believe that some of the excitement for shooting in Georgia has been tempered by our politics,” Fitzgerald remarked.

Fitzgerald obtained this advantage on The Naked Gun, according to Ric Reitz, a longtime friend and fellow actor who helped create the 2008 film tax credit.

In this line of work, lightning can strike at any time, according to Reitz. However, when you are ready, confident, and have a body of work that attracts the energy to you, it strikes more frequently and with greater force. Wilbur had experienced that.

Fitzgerald had only occasionally dabbled in humor prior to The Naked Gun, including a brief appearance as an opthalmologist in Anchorman 2, which was filmed in metro Atlanta over ten years ago.

“Hopefully, this will enhance my reputation as a comedian,” he remarked.

Fitzgerald was transported by Paramount to the hectic New York City showing of The Naked Gun on Monday. He couldn’t get close to Neeson and Anderson because of the intense media swarm on them on the red carpet. However, he was successful in promoting the film to reporters from Variety, Entertainment Tonight, and Rolling Stone.

Fitzgerald has always gotten employment over the years for a reason, according to his pal, Atlanta actor Steve Coulter.

According to Coulter, he has a really youthful spirit. He has always exuded an air of genuine enjoyment of life. There’s always something that excites him. You take your hits in this line of work and keep getting back up. He doesn’t take himself seriously, but he does take his work seriously.

Fitzgerald has no immediate intentions to retire.

“I’m lucky,” he said. I still enjoy my work. I give it everything I’ve got.
