Sheriff s office urges Macon residents to avoid illegal gunfire on July 4th
Georgia’s MACON (41NBC/WMGT) Residents are being advised by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to keep careful when using pyrotechnics and to refrain from celebratory shootings on Independence Day.
The sheriff’s office stated in a news release that celebratory shootings are dangerous and prohibited. Georgia law prohibits firing a firearm carelessly or within 50 yards of a public road or roadway.
According to the announcement, anything that is fired into the air has to fall. In addition to causing human hurt or even death, stray bullets can destroy personal property.
The public was cautioned by the sheriff’s office that gunshots that fall to the ground might do significant damage.
According to the release, many people are aware that a bullet will travel far into the sky, but they don’t consider the fact that it will return to Earth quickly.
Residents are also being reminded of fireworks safety regulations by the sheriff’s office. Fireworks are permitted on July 3 and July 4 from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. However, using pyrotechnics is prohibited for anyone under the age of 18, and an adult should always be present when fireworks are being set off.
Over the course of the holiday weekend, Bibb County patrol officers will be on duty, monitoring anyone who may be driving while intoxicated or handling firearms or fireworks carelessly.
According to the announcement, “We want to do our part to ensure that everyone has a safe and happy July 4th celebration.”
