Former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter honored with post office dedication
PLAINS, Georgia (WMGT/41NBC) The 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, and his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, were honored today with a new name for the USPS office in Plains.
For the Carter family, the structure that is now the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office holds immense significance.
James Earl Chip Carter III, the late couple’s son, claimed that his father sent thousands of pieces of mail via the Plains post office to be postmarked from his hometown when he ran for governor, state senate, and office. Therefore, having their name on it is a huge honor.
According to the 2020 Census, there were 573 people living in Plains, Georgia. Given how much the community depends on tourism as a result of his father’s presidency, Chip Carter says his parents would have valued the commitment.
According to Carter, they would likely be thrilled and optimistic about Plains’ success.
During their ascent to the White House, the former first family remained loyal to their small-town roots, according to speakers. However, USPS Southern Area Vice President Chenise LeDoux says the name commitment was a no-brainer because of their subsequent work constructing houses, combating illnesses, and fostering peace with the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity.
According to Ledoux, their humanitarian efforts made them outstanding public servants. Therefore, they passed the law enabling us to rename this post office without any problems.
President Carter was known to write love letters to his wife while serving in the U.S. Navy, and Ledoux referred to him as an advocate for the postal service. Chip said he hopes his parents will continue to inspire with the name of the post office.
Carter hoped that people would take note of it and perhaps become a little more inclined to assist those in need.
Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) introduced and passed H.R. 9600 in January, which led to the renaming of the post office.
