Salvation Army opens cooling center during heat wave

Georgia’s MACON (41NBC/WMGT) To help withstand this week’s deadly heat, The Salvation Army has opened a cooling center in Macon.

Dr. Latresa White, the director of social services, said the center opened Monday at noon and will stay open if the heat index rises beyond 100 degrees. High heat index levels are expected to persist through at least Friday, according to current predictions.

The facility’s two dorms will be available to those in need of assistance. Visitors can remain until the weather returns to a safe range after signing in when they arrive. The center may be open in the evening and at night, depending on the temperature.

Depending on the time of day, guests will either receive a hot meal or a bag lunch. In structured groups, meals are offered at breakfast, noon, and dinner. Throughout the day, water and ice-filled coolers will also be accessible.

The shelter is unable to welcome those who are registered as sex offenders due to the presence of minors.

Water, periodicals, board games, snacks, and other items to keep people comfortable as they wait out the heat are all being accepted by the Salvation Army in addition to cash donations.

The cooling center can be found in Macon at 1955 Broadway.
