Skydiver killed in parachute collision at Upson County airport
Georgia’s Thomason (41NBC/WMGT) According to the Upson County Sheriff’s Office, a 48-year-old skydiver from Locust Grove died Saturday afternoon during a mid-air parachute mishap at Skydive Atlanta in Upson County.
According to a statement from Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore, deputies arrived to the Thomaston-Upson County Airport at 4:22 p.m. and discovered the woman, identified as Jasmine Black, dead on the tarmac.
Early examination showed that as Black approached the landing zone, her parachute met with another skydiver’s parachute at a low height. She shut off her primary chute, according to the authorities, and tried to use her emergency parachute, but it didn’t open because of the low altitude.
Black was said to be a skilled skydiver who has made over 160 jumps.
The sheriff’s office is currently receiving assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration, which responded to the scene.
