Washington County names new school superintendent as Vickie Harden retires

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Washington County Schools will have new leadership starting July 1 as Superintendent Vickie Harden prepares to retire after more than 30 years in education.

The Board of Education has appointed Assistant Superintendent Timothy May to serve as the next superintendent.


According to a news release from the school district



, the Board accepted Harden’s retirement resignation during its June 12 meeting. Harden, a Washington County native and graduate of the county’s high school, has served the district in roles including teacher, principal, CTAE Director and Pre-K Director.

She was named superintendent in 2023.


“We thank Mrs. Harden for her 32 years of service to Washington County Schools and wish her continued good health and success in her retirement,” the release said.

According to the school district, May has worked in education for 23 years and has recently helped lead the district’s strategic planning and instructional improvements as Assistant Superintendent.

“In this role he has led the development of our Strategic Plan and has advanced processes to refocus and strengthen instructional practices,” the release said.

Sandra McMaster, who has served as Interim Superintendent, will conclude her temporary role on June 30 and return to her position as Deputy Superintendent.
