Girls Dig Deeper Initiative hosting drive-thru food distribution in Macon Saturday
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The
Girls Dig Deeper Initiative
is holding a drive-thru food distribution Saturday, June 14 in Macon.
According to a Macon-Bibb County news release, the event will happen from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bloomfield Community Center, located at 1931 Rocky Creek Road. Organizers say the food distribution will serve the first 100 families who arrive and will include canned fruit, vegetables, beans, soup and crackers.
According to the release, Girls Dig Deeper Initiative (GDDI) is a partner in the Macon Violence Prevention program and is working with the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank to provide the items.
“This is our first food distribution because we heard from families about children not having enough to eat in the summer, as well as the challenges they face from rising food costs,” GDDI Executive Director Najiva Tomothee said. “Food insecurity and lack of access to meals can significantly contribute to increased crime in communities, especially during the summer months.”
GDDI offers a variety of programs for teens and families, including mentorship for girls, money management classes, teen mental health and conflict resolution seminars and leadership events.
According to the release, GDDI received $30,000 in grant funding between 2022 and 2024 from Macon Violence Prevention through the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. In 2024, Georgia Power also awarded GDDI $2,167 for its Spring Break camp.
