Dozen of cats abandoned outside Houston County Humane Society

CENTERVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – In a

shocking incident over the weekend, 25 cats were found abandoned outside the Houston County Humane Society late Friday night, crammed into seven crates. The heartbreaking discovery was made nearly 12 hours later.

Dee Allison, President of the Houston County Humane Society, urges pet owners to take greater responsibility for their animals.

“Be responsible. If you get an animal, it is a lifetime commitment, not just something until you get tired of it,” she emphasized.

According to Georgia law, it is illegal to abandon a domesticated animal

.  The law states no one can knowingly and intentionally leave a domesticated animal on public or private property or in a public right-of-way.

“Spay those Mama Kitties so that they aren’t having more babies,” advised Allison.

She noted the organization is currently over capacity, a situation Allison says she hasn’t witnessed in nearly two decades, and leaving her calling for more volunteers to assist in caring for the animals.

“They have to be cleaned up after, they have to be fed, they have to be medicated, they have to be taken to the vet. All this takes manpower; and that’s why we so need volunteers to step into it; cause when we get volunteers to help, then we might be able to help one or two more if were over capacity level,” she explained.

The abandoned cats were taken to animal control for assessment and are now back with their original rescue organization, Circle of Friends in Macon.

The Humane Society encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious activity regarding animal abandonment, to call them at

(478) 599-0211

or the Houston County 911 Center for a non-emergency welfare check.
