Shurling Library kicks off Summer Reading Season
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Shurling Library kicked off the Summer Reading Season on Tuesday evening as a ton of kids and parents showed up to enjoy a certain surprise.
Spider-Girl (Gwen Stacy) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales) transversed the Spider-Verse to make a surprise visit as they read

, written and illustrated by Diane Alber, while asking and answering the kids’ burning questions.
They also joined them for arts and crafts as they left painted handprints on a wall poster, made superhero masks using pipe straws, and took pictures with the icons.
“We’re having parties at all of our library branches during this week just to get kids and families encouraged to come out to the library, have a good time, enjoy free games, snacks, activities, and things like that, but also check out library books and get signed up for our summer reading program,” said Andrew Willis, Marketing Coordinator for Middle Georgia Regional Library (MGRL).
“Our summer reading program, we do this every year and the goal of it is to make sure that kids keep their minds engaged and active during the summer break. There’s something called the summer slide and that’s when kids maybe lose literacy skills because they’re not actively doing those assignments,” said Willis. “So we want to make sure that they’re staying on grade level or sometimes even going above and beyond grade level with their reading skills.”
After hitting their summer reading goal of 25 hours they will receive a special Spider-Verse themed certificate from Megan Hunter, Children’s Specialist for Shurling Library.
Shurling Library is located at 1769 Shurling Drive and the next event will be Tape Painting on June 5th at 3:00 p.m.
