GDC investigates inmate death at Telfair State Prison

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — An inmate at Telfair State Prison died Monday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The inmate was identified as Lester Smith. He died June 2, and his body was turned over to the county coroner. The body will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

The incident is under investigation by the Department of Corrections’ Office of Professional Standards. No additional details have been released.

Smith was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for a murder conviction out of Cobb County.
